Warnock in Cup Final fitness race

Aston Villa defender Stephen Warnock has been told by Martin O'Neill to rest for two weeks before his shin injury is reassessed.

The left-back was substituted just into the second half of Villa's FA Cup encounter against Brighton.

O'Neill told the official club website, "Stephen will have to rest for a while. We will have a look and see how he is in a couple of weeks. That is what the specialist has said."

"We will have to see if it settles down. Obviously, he's desperate to be playing. It's disappointing because he's been brilliant for us."

However there is more encouraging involving John Carew. The Norway striker has resumed full training after missing the last two Premier League matches with a knee injury.

Marc Albrighton is also close to a return to action and captain Stiliyan Petrov's Achilles injury is being monitored.
